The wait is nearly over! In just two days the boxing world will pause for a moment and all eyes will once again be on the welterweight division! Only this time it involves the IBF world champion Errol Spence Jr (24-0, 21 KO’s). Spence is considered by many to be one of the best; if not the best in the division. He’ll be taking on Mikey Garcia (39-0, 30 KO’s), a four weight division champion, who is currently the WBC lightweight world champion! With 63 wins, 51 KO’s and no losses between the two competitors, it’s sure to be one of the most exciting nights in boxing this year! This is the type of match that fans and boxing experts dream of!
Mikey Garcia will be jumping up two weight classes to take on Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr! Many have him coming in as the “underdog” and upon looking at the two standing close together, you can visibly see the size difference. None of that matters to Mikey Garcia who has stated several times that he “plans on fighting the best and for his legacy.” When the dust settles in this Texas showdown, Saturday March 16th, we will be able to look at Garcia’s last five opponents. All of them were current champions and Adrien Broner was a multiple weight division champion himself. This alone shows that Garcia is willing to fight the elite. Coming in an underdog will not lower his confidence at all!
Garcia, a 31 years old California citizen is taking on the champion (Spence) in his home town of Dallas, Texas! People can say what they want, but Garcia is no stranger when it comes to fighting in the Lone Star state! In fact, this will be his 9th fight in the country! OK OK it’s a state, but you know how the saying goes…Texas seems to stand on it’s own. Garcia has picked up some significant victories in Texas and has stated, “Texas is like a second home.” This will be Spence’s 6th fight in his hometown, but let me remind you that’s only since turning professional. He has fought all over Texas as an amateur and went on to become a member of the 2012 Olympic team. He would end up losing in the quarter finales and turn pro that same year.
Since then he has racked up win after win and has displayed his all around boxing ability throughout his career, including great punching power! As I stated in my previous articled titled “All Eyes On Me”, the biggest win in Spence’s career would be his win over Kell Brook! At that time, Spence was in Garcia’s shoes making his way to the UK and being looked upon as the underdog. I clearly remember a co-worker telling me that Spence may be in over his head. Well, we know how that ended! He crushed Kell Brook and became the New IBF champion of the world!
During the media workouts this week, you were able to see just how comfortable the two were with fans and media. Many have traveled from all over to be apart of this historic match up! Both fighters are humble and you can tell that they really appreciate their fans and value media relations. This will be back to back fights for the Dallas (DeSoto) native in his home state. Spence’s last fight was June of 2018, where he obliterated his mandatory challenger with a ripping body shot in the first round!
When you look at “The Truth” as they call him (Errol Spence Jr), you’ll notice that only THREE of his opponents have made it to the final bell! The same goes for Garcia who has fifteen more professional fights than Spence Jr. Only NINE of his opponents have been able to stand a chance to win by decision. These two spectacular athletes mean business when they enter the ring! I expect nothing to be different other than the magnitude of this event. It all goes down this Saturday at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas! If you can’t witness the fight in person, don’t fret. Check it out live on Pay-Per View. The fight will also be shown in select movie theaters as well.
If the welterweight division could talk you would hear it saying – ALL EYE’S ON ME!
